Back in the olden days when we were all young, I exhibited the beautiful work of Richard Prince in my small gallery on 57th Street. I sold pieces to major museum and corporatate collections, and had a cordial, professional relationship with him. He now repudiates all of the art that I exhibited and sold and has even denied having actually created these works of art. Richard seems to want to rewrite his early art career, and this attempt calls into question many of our assumptions in the art world regarding originality, attribution and value. This blog discusses these issues.
